An earthquake has caused a rise in underground water temperatures, setting off mud volcano’s and small amounts of lava along a fault line in the Kyaukpyu area on Ramree Island.
According to Soe Thein, a retired geologist, there might be more eruptions, however there is a little danger and no need for evacuations. Kyaukpyu is located along the fault line for a number of underground hot springs which extends all the way to the Magwe Region of Burma.
Ramree Island has a long history of volcanic activity. It is reported that in Sai Chong village, east of Kyaukphu, Nagar Gri (Dragon) Volcano erupted on 5th January 2008 spewing lava and magma 300-feet in the air. Similar eruptions have been reported in 2006, 2000, 1996 and 1990.
