Ramree island is about 1350 km² (521mi²) in size and lies about 20 km from the mainland with the smaller island of Cheduba about 8 km south. It has an estimated population of 400,000 people mainly in it’s main town of Kyaukpyu, located at the northern tip of the island. Apart from the two towns of Kyaukpyu and Ramree (or Ramri, half way down the east coast) there are only small villages and hamlets.
